Power Distribution Project of Hainan Wenchang Space Launch Site

Project Background

The commercial Wenchang Space Launch Site is located on the coast of Hainan, featuring year-round high humidity and salt spray. Its core power distribution room supports uninterrupted critical services including launch telemetry & control, command communication and data computation. It imposes aerospace-grade stringent requirements far exceeding ordinary industrial standards on the safety level of the power distribution system, power supply continuity, environmental weather resistance and long-period maintenance-free performance.

Project Overview

This project supplies bulk power distribution equipment for the core distribution rooms of the launch site, providing high-grade power guarantee for launch command, telemetry and communication systems. The equipment must withstand coastal salt spray and high-humidity conditions as well as intense vibration during satellite launches.

Solution Description

Two independent incoming power supplies are configured according to on-site power demand to feed two separate busbar sections. Busbar voltage is collected and monitored in real time by voltage transformer units. Each busbar section is equipped with outgoing circuits to supply power to electrical loads. A bus tie switch is used for power source switching between the two busbar sections. Under normal operating conditions, the bus tie switch remains open and the two busbar sections operate independently. If any incoming power supply fails, the protection device detects busbar undervoltage. After confirming the incoming switch is open, the bus tie switch automatically closes. The remaining healthy power source takes over the full load to realize automatic transfer of standby power supply.

Project Requirements & Challenges

This project delivers uninterrupted power supply for core services such as satellite launch, telemetry and communication. The primary mandatory requirement is that the switchgear meets AG5 seismic intensity level 9. The switchgear must remain stable and reliable under strong seismic conditions to avoid power outages for core services.

Located in a tropical coastal zone, the site suffers multiple environmental hazards including high temperature, high humidity, salt spray and severe thunderstorms. Salty atmosphere tends to cause corrosion of metal components and condensation-induced ageing on insulation surfaces. The switchgear shall deliver reliable anti-corrosion, moisture-proof and anti-condensation performance to achieve long-term stable and maintenance-free operation.

The solution consisting of ASNA atmospheric sealed Natural Air insulated switchgear meets project requirements and eliminates the safety hazard of gas leakage from gas-filled switchgear. It has passed dedicated salt spray and damp-heat tests. Relying on factory prefabricated modular units, it enables rapid on-site installation. A dedicated technical team was on-site to complete full-loop joint commissioning and all verifications, and the project passed acceptance at the first attempt.
