Project Background
In 2014, the first batch of Tesla Superchargers in Västerås, Sweden, supporting this project was completed and put into operation. It serves as a highly representative energy replenishment infrastructure for new energy vehicles in Northern Europe. As a high-power dynamic electrical load scenario, the supercharger station imposes stringent requirements on the 10kV distribution system in terms of power supply reliability, equipment stability, fault handling capability and low-carbon compliance.
Project Overview
• Construction Date: July 2014
• Project Location: Västerås, Sweden. Winter temperatures are generally below −5°C, with extreme lows down to −25°C.
• Supplied Products: 12kV ASNA RMU
• Delivery Quantity: 12 units
• Manufacturing Lead Time: 30 days
• Application Scenario: Inside enclosures of outdoor secondary substations
Solution Description
Tailored to the requirements of the project scenario, engineers integrated the 12kV ASNA RMU inside an E-house. Switchgear layout and secondary wiring were completed in the factory. On-site work only requires foundation installation and cable connection for plug-and-play deployment, greatly reducing civil construction work. A self-powered relay protection scheme is adopted for protection. No DC panel or external auxiliary power supply is required, delivering higher reliability with no risk of battery degradation.
Project Requirements & Challenges
♦ Guarantee switchgear reliability under low-temperature conditions: Extreme winter temperatures in the area can drop below −25°C. Outdoor equipment is also subjected to rain, snow, ice and salt spray corrosion. Therefore, the equipment must address multiple low-temperature challenges, including stable mechanical performance, weather resistance of insulating materials and failure risks of the sealed air chamber.
♦ Reliable support for dynamic high-power charging loads: Supercharger stations feature dynamic high-power load surges. Conventional load switch and fuse-switch solutions cannot provide full-range fault interruption and protection for both lines and transformers. Hence, we supplied full-circuit-breaker grade RMU capable of interrupting and isolating all types of faults to effectively protect core assets including transformers and charging piles.
♦Integrated design and connection with the client’s metering compartment: In compliance with local metering requirements, the original wiring structure of the equipment was modified to facilitate on-site installation and interfacing.
Project Outcomes
Since commissioning, the project has operated stably with zero faults. It perfectly adapts to the harsh local outdoor conditions and new-energy load demands, fully achieving the construction goals of high reliability, zero greenhouse gas emissions and maintenance-free operation.
